SOUNDHOLES

One of the distinctive visual elements of Ovation guitars is the use of mutli-soundhole epaulet, wave sound ports and other setups beyond the standard center soundhole configuration. This is more than mere aesthetics, the placement and design of of the soundholes augment and enhance the acoustic sound of each guitar.

Laser Cut Epaulets – exotic wood leaf-shaped “epaulets” are now inlaid into the top with laser precision. The new cleaner design actually offers a slight sound enhancement. For more information on the mutli-soundhole design, see 5 Piece Epaulets below.

5 Piece Epaulets – Our 5 piece epaulet design was created for more than just appearance’s sake. The mutli-hole design lets sound come through at pivotal regions on the soundboard. The spaced location of the soundholes provides great resonance and durability of the soundboard itself, while maintaining the level of projection during acoustic performance. Materials used for the epaulets differ by guitar series, in an attempt to enhance the visual effect of the instrument using varied exotic woods and elements.

Bass Side Epaulets – Bass side epaulets appear only on upper portion of the guitar soundboard. This location, due to the vibrations of the top and movement of air within the guitar, produces a richer bass tone than either the center sound hole or 2 sided epaulet configurations.

Center Soundhole – The more traditional soundhole design combines the classic guitar look with superb acoustic performance. Ovation has long been know for its innovate bracing designs that give each style of guitar that unique voice and projection. Our engineers go through a rigorous process of testing each new model with our laser vibrometer, testing the response of each top shape and material with the corresponding bracing pattern. This ensure that each soundhole configuration will be stretched right to the limits of performance to give you the spectacular results you expect from Ovation.

Wave Soundports – One of our newest designs, the wave soundports give a distinct look for the performer, while continuing on the mandate to improve tonal quality. As with the epaulet design, these soundports are placed in prime acoustic regions on the guitar top to give you maximum clarity and volume. What design will our engineers come up with next ? You’ll have to keep checking back, as we are always looking to continue our lead in acoustic / electric design and capabilities.

NUTWIDTH

A standard 1 11/16″ nut width is found on most models, with an alternate 1 3/4″ size available on specific models.

Ovation guitar

1 11/16″ Nutwidth – This is the standard nutwidth for most ovation models, selected for maximum comfort and playability.

Ovation guitar1 3/4″ – The larger 1 3/4″ width is designed for classical and fingerpicking styles, the extra width providing extra separation between strings. This will be typically be found on nylon string guitar. – Our solid cedar tops produce a slighting different tonal voice than the spruce soundboards. Cedar is known to produce a richer low end sound, but still maitaining solid overall balance.

CUTAWAY vs. NON-CUTAWAY

Ovation produces guitars in both cutaway and non-cutaway styles. Although there is a variance in body shape, you will find that the classic Ovation sound is produced with equal effectiveness with either choice.

Ovation guitar

Cutaway – The cutaway guitar is designed to give great access and playability when using the higher frets on the soundboard, useful when playing solos which require use of those positions.

Ovation guitar

Non-Cutaway – The non-cutaway uses a full body shape, with easy access up to the 15th fret before the body. Some extra projection will be found due to the fuller bowl shape of the body.

ELECTRONICS

Each Ovation preamp system is developed to maximize the plugged in sound of the guitar. We offer a variety of preamp choices, with various levels of features and options.
